世界農業遺産とは

世界農業遺産（Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems（GIAHS）：ジアス）は、2002年（平成14年）、食料の安定確保を目指す国際組織「国際連合食糧農業機関」（FAO、本部：イタリア・ローマ）によって創設されたプロジェクトです。

その背景には、近代農業にみられる過度な生産性偏重が、世界各地で環境問題や生物多様性、その地域に固有の文化や景観などが失われてきたことが挙げられます。

世界農業遺産の目的は、地域環境を生かした伝統的農法や、生物多様性、農村文化、農村景観が守れた土地利用などを「農業のシステム」として一体的に維持し、次世代に継承していくことを目指しています。

国際連合教育科学文化機関（UNESCO（ユネスコ））が推進する世界遺産が、遺跡や歴史的建造物、自然など「不動産」を登録し保護することを目的としているのに対して、世界農業遺産は、「農業のシステム」を認定することで保全につなげていくことを目指しています。

認定地域は世界各国に広がり、2014年4月末現在で31サイト、内、国内では以下の5サイトが認定されています。

• 国内外における知名度が上がります。これを活用すれば観光振興や農業振興に効果があると考えます。
• 地域住民による地域資源を活用した新たなビジネスや生業のアイデアが生まれることが期待できます。
• 大事なことは、地域が主体的に世界農業遺産を活用していくことであると考えています。

国内では、これまで以下の5サイトが認定されています。

  Ssdo's Satoyama in harmony with the Japanese crested ibis ( Sado region, Niigata Prefecture, June 2011)

  Traditional Tea-grass Integrated System in Shizuoka ( Kakegawa surrounding area, Shizuoka Prefecture, May 2013)
